How Does The Discovery MindBlown Plasma Globe Work?
Aged 14+ the plasma ball is very easy to set up. You can power it using 4x AA batteries that go underneath the plastic globe mount. Or you can plug it into a USB port.
A small switch on the side turns the plasma globe on.
Touch the outside of the glass ball and watch as the electric bolts of light dance and play with your fingertips creating your own magical light show.
If you hold your fingers in one place on the globe you’ll tend to get a singular purple light bolt going to one finger. It may also skip across to a neighboring finger.
But if you hold your fingers just above the globe you get a more dispersed light bolt display as the electrons try and find something to earth with.
When you first turn it on the globe doesn’t interact or shoot out many beams of light unless you use your fingers to draw out the bolts of electricity. But leave it for a few minutes and the globe will happily dance away shooting out whisps of playful electrical charge.
What is Plasma?
Plasma is the 4th state of matter with solid, liquid and gas being the other three. Although technically, it’s the first state of matter, as all matter is formed from plasma. With 99% of the universe being plasma!
How Does A Plasma Ball Work?
Inside the plasma globe, is a small coil of wires that have electrons running through them oscillating at a very high frequency. This causes the electrons on the gases inside the globe to fall off leaving behind positive ions which make plasma. When you touch the outside of the globe the electrons travel through the plasma, earthing themselves through your fingertips creating colourful arcs of light.
What Did We Think Of The Discovery MindBlown Plasma Globe?
The globe might be small, but that makes it the perfect desktop toy for teens and older. The small size means it’s not going to take up much room. Plus it fits perfectly into the palm of your hand making it a very tactile de-stress toy. Particularly for teens studying hard for their exams!
I love that it has a USB charging cable. But if you need it to be cable-free, there is the option of using batteries.
And as mentioned, although a little slow to start. Once powered up for a few minutes the plasma ball continually shoots out playful wisps of colourful electric charge.
The globe can be used during the day but it’s a good idea to have something dark in the background. But it’s at night that it really comes into its own. When it just looks really cool flickering away in the corner!
